National President of Bus Conductors Association of Nigeria (BCAN), Mr. Israel Adeshola, has said from March 1, it will become mandatory for bus conductors in Lagos State to wear uniforms, nametags and badges.

Adeshola, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja yesterday, said the Lagos State government has approved wearing of uniforms and badges. He said that the use of badges and wearing of uniforms by over 3,000 bonafide members got the approval of the government on Monday.

“We are in collaboration with the Lagos State government on the issue of badges and uniforms for commercial conductors, which was finalised on Monday. This is because we don’t want to start without the government’s approval. So by first week of March we will roll them out,’’ he said.

According to him, with the vital information on the badge, any conductor involved in crime can easily be identified and apprehended. The national president explained that the novel idea was being experimented in Lagos before other states take a cue.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State government yesterday vowed to start impounding vehicles emitting fumes, as such vehicles do not befit Lagos aspiration to be Africa’s model megacity, that is safe, secured, functional and productive.

Speaking yesterday at the handover of 25 pickup vans, 11 Nissan cars and 20 power bikes to aid the operations of Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) officers in Lagos, the Acting Commissioner for Transport, Prince Lanre Elegushi, said with the support of the state government, Governor Akinwunmi Ambode expects better performance from the VIS, especially in the area of enforcement.

He said that though compliance is improving but with the new vehicles, the VIS enforcement efforts would be better enhanced.

The Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer in Lagos, Gbolahan Toriola, maintained that the VIS is ready to take enforcement more seriously as it is ready to cover more areas now.
