Despite being on the receiving end of intense criticism, Innocent ‘2baba’ Idibia, says he doesn’t mind being called a coward as long as he continues to “speak up.”

The singer has been heavily chastised for choosing to back out of the One Voice Nigeria protest over security concerns and fears that the march may be hijacked by criminal elements.

Although the protest held across the country on Monday, February 6, many Nigerians believe it would have attracted more participation, had the African Queen singer not chosen to pull out.

Reacting to the barrage of social media attacks, 2baba put out a video on his Instagram page late on Tuesday, thanking Nigerians for coming out to protest in spite of the odds stacked against them.

The singer said he watched the protest with “tears” in his eyes, adding that he was happy that people lent their voices to the cause when he lost his own.

He said: “First of all, I’d like to thank you for the messages and solidarity. I watched with tears in my eyes as Nigerians came out to speak up in protest – on the streets, social media, radio.

“I watched demonstrated that no voice is louder than the other. I watched as many people called me a coward but I’m happy that I’m a coward that spoke up and I will always continue to speak up.

“I watched as many of you defied all odds to come out to tell the government that you deserve better lives.

“I’m grateful for everybody that lent their voice when I lost mine., You guys are the real heroes. I’m happy you protested peacefully.”

Comedian, Gordons, recently criticised 2baba’s approach to the protest and also called him an illiterate in the process.

The comedian has since apologised for his words, saying he meant no insult.
